Gigabyte U2442 is a good laptop with a complex future
1 August in the Russian market appeared the Gigabyte U2442T notebook model with touch screen and preinstalled Windows 8. In my opinion, the ability to click on large angular icons directly in the display is still a debatable option, so I will talk about almost the same machine, but with Windows 7 and no extra sensors — U2442.
The company calls this model ultrabook, but since the authorship of the term still belongs to Intel, I prefer to use the word laptop. The fact that he was a little thicker, heavier and... maybe even slightly more powerful than those gadgets that are called ultrabooks.
the Design
The body of the gadget made of plastic, but the lid is topped with a layer painted about the same color of the metal. And in top of lid there is another plastic insert that houses the antennas of wireless modules (Wi-Fi b/g/n and BT 4.0).
The lower panel is attached to the chassis 21 by the screw and removed extremely simply. Screwdriver to twist necessary, of course, decent, but design Gigabyte was a very, very strong. The feeling is almost the same as from metal buildings.
After removing the bottom panel, the user will have access to the cooling system and the HDD. If you suddenly want to change the RAM, it will be enough to turn out one screw of 21 to open a small hatch giving access to a pair of laths DDR-3 at four gigabytes.
Ports at the ends of the device are not very many, but enough for 99% of users. The left side has an Ethernet port, is already outdated (but not useless) VGA, USB, 3.5 mm jacks for microphone and headphones and a connector for the Kensington lock. On the opposite side of the power connector, HDMI, two USB (but high-speed, 3.0) and a memory card reader.
Rear found a pair of nozzles of the cooling system. And it is curious that within the housing a flow of hot air seems to be separated (see photo above), as if to heating to different degrees CPU and powerful NVIDIA graphics-loaded only "their" cooler. But for all that, copper heat pipes pass through both heat sources. Well, the coolers start to spin rapidly. Noisy work.
Display
The device screen has a diagonal of 14 inches and a resolution of 1600х600. Protective Matt coating that minimizes the amount of glare, but the brightness is not always enough. Indoors, of course, no problem, but if you go to the balcony, for example, the image pretty much fades. Viewing angle horizontal max. (not 180º, of course, but close), but vertically it turns 110 degrees, and not all Polonia possible to achieve the correct color.
As for fixing the cover to the body, two small hinges do their job perfectly. The display does not settle under its own weight, when shaking off (so the Acer Aspire S3, for example), but offers not very much tight — database to hold hand do not have. The only time a hook could be a little more comfortable, and even after six months of work with laptop you have to look for it a couple of seconds to the touch.
Keyboard/touchpad
In a 14-inch laptop you can quite easily fit a comfortable keyboard, and a Gigabyte here not make a blunder. Unreal wide right Shift (to the left could be bigger, but it's fine), large Ctrl, full-sized Enter and Backspace impressive. Personally I'm more for happiness don't need to print long texts on this keyboard is quite comfortable. Move keys, I'd say a little more than is now customary in notebooks, but this did not prevent anything. But about the clicking sound engineers, not seem to think, since the buttons still rattle a little, and over time it begins to irritate a bit.
The large touchpad is good. But lately I got used to the fact that the "mouse buttons" is not selected and inscribed in the surface of the touchpad. In the U2442 is under the touch surface is a plastic strip in the color of the body, which is not always easy to press on touch. Plus, she pressed pretty tight and it makes a very pleasant sound.
But pleasantly pleased with the gesture support. The sensor detects the maximum three touch at the same time, but I personally have more than two fingers don't normally do: zooming, scrolling, moving back and forth in the browser — that's pretty much all you need. U2442 and it works without any brakes.
Sound
The dynamics in this model is located directly under the screen. Gigabyte States that has implemented a super-duper Creative technology THX TruStudio Pro. But I personally did not notice anything special. Surround sound, crystal clear, that's all... Speakers loud, can't argue with that, but at the maximum of the start bit pohramyvaet, but that's about surround sound and other buns — it's marketing in its purest form.
Performance
In the U2442 uses the Intel Core i5 Ivy Bridge (third generation). In my case, the modification was 3210М and worked at a frequency of 2.5 GHz.
The graphics is just a couple of solutions: Intel HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M. When the load is small, works, of course, built-in interesnoe the kernel, and in games connects the discrete card.
RAM — 8 GB DDR-3 — a couple of strips of Transcend 4 GB. The volume for the laptop is sufficient, speed is also enough.
But with a hard drive interesting. By default, the minimum configuration includes SSD 128 GB, which, of course, a little, considering how much it now weighs OS and its accompanying software, so you can optionally install the normal (or hybrid if you wish) hard drive 750 GB. Thus, the system will operate at high termotehnika, and the content can throw at a volumetric screw.
hours
Working time is critical for me option. Even at home sometimes I want to stand up and just pull the plug from the laptop, go to the kitchen, drink tea under the film and not think about what else needs to pull the plug and carry with it and the power supply. In short, I decided to use the standard "home" test — launched a movie on the laptop (720p, 2273 kbps), unscrewed brightness on 100% and waited. Took a couple of hours, and the gadget you're begging for mercy. Lacked quite a bit to watch "What's eating Gilbert Grape", but for the most part, films batteries 4300 mAh should suffice. Well, if not easy, brightness set to 60%, and not watch a movie, and sit, say, in the Network, the battery will last a little more — approximately 2:40.
Summary
In the end, we have assembled a great 14-inch laptop with a decent screen and powerful stuffing, but by today's standards its thickness (21 mm) and weight (1.8 kg) still a little more than I would like. I wouldn't call it really portable. And besides, he asked for an order of 40 thousand rubles. For the money, for example, you can buy fresh 13-inch MacBook Air. I agree, it's two different laptop for different tasks, but I just want to say that in this price range there are plenty to choose from (there is already not only about Apple is about). Gigabyte has a good reputation in the field of iron production, but the question is, how many buyers will make a choice in favor of a laptop with such a label? Be on the cover of this models are more "notebook" logo, perhaps the future of the gadget would be more specific.
